I have long contended the majority of people diagnosed with a "mental health" problem, in reality, have true underlying medical issues that are not discovered due to a lack of testing. Doctors don't listen to patients, they basically abdicate their professional training and obligations to science and patient care, and just conclude (based on no evidence) that people are hypochondriacs or "faking" their complaints. And of course in the USA this also/mostly has do to with profit. 

Psychologists and psychiatrists practice pseudoscience. They are wrong as often as right, and often wrong far more than right. They don't generally use blood or urine tests, MRI's, CAT Scans, X-Rays or anything "scientific" to diagnose patients, they just guess, they prescribe meds where they have no idea what the ingredients are, no idea if they will help or harm, and many of them do massive harm. They prescribe whatever the "flavor of the day" is based on whatever recently came from Big Pharma, they invest in Wall Street based on the meds they prescribe...it's not "science" based, it's not as beneficial as they and the media hypes, and in the opinion of "some" people, they are not "real" doctors.

Far too many people conflate Big Pharma profits and doses prescribed with actual benefit for patients and society. This proves that point. Large corporations, lobbyists, lawyers for companies etc...have far too much influence and power. I have yet to come across someone that has a so called "rare" disease, that doesn't spend years and a gazillion dollars seeing shrinks, only to years later come across a doctor who actually cares, runs tests, finds out the true medical issue, and the "mental health" diagnosis was totally debunked. It's tragic, ruins peoples lives and is just so disgusting.

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, POTS, Dysautonomia, etc.

                          

MCAS sufferer here, who had to circumvent my own doctors to get blood/urine tests proving elevated tryptase, prostaglandin, IgE, etc, which did not go over well with their egos. For 23 years doctors told me I was a hypochondriac and needed a shrink. Vindication eventually, but 2 decades of my life were wasted arguing with those pompous blowhards, so that "victory" means little. 

This may not apply to you, as everyone is unique, but excipients, dyes and fillers in prescribed and OTC meds and supplements can be major triggers for some people with MCAS. Red dye is in most pills, (bleached white) and often under names like "Aluminum Lake" and 100s of others. Microcrystalline cellulose is another that affects some of us, and it's in just about everything. My point is, if you hit a "wall" after eating "clean" and all the rest, consider what's in meds and supplements, and possibly even skin care and makeup. I'm a "dude", so know nothing about that, whereas for females that use those products, topical transdermal "pollution" into the body via those products is possible, even suppositories are known to have ingredients that bother some people due to "booty" skin absorption. 

Lack of sleep due to elevated histamine, fluorescent lights in schools and just about any commercial building, inability to concentrate in class or work, all can have a detrimental effect on your quality of life, plus can cause anxiety, stress, etc. Anyway, most people with MCAS and related diseases are going to struggle trying to get proper medical care at this point in time. And I really wish the medical establishment would grasp what idiopathic means, as in things cycle, migrate, change and are not always constant so certain tests are not always going to reveal symptoms. It would help if they would use critical thinking skills rather than rely on rote memorization only. Okay, enough bloviating out of me. :)

Anxiety: Do you have Panic Attacks? A lot of people do. Millions. According to some data, over 40 million adults in the U.S. (roughly 20%) have an anxiety disorder, and approximately 7% of children aged 3-17. Some of the contributing factors are poor health, difficult relationships, unemployment, poverty, disadvantage, loneliness, work stress, exposure to violence, trauma, and conflict, plus, in the USA, we have the most expensive medical care on the planet, much of which is half-ass at best, and lousy as fuck at the worst. And millions of people go bankrupt, paying for that substandard care. Literally, millions of people go bankrupt.  

Anxiety is often dismissed by society as a whole, and pathetically, doctors as well, as being some minor little thing. So what actually happens during a severe panic attack? A racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling and muscle tension, and that's just the beginning. You also may have nausea, heart palpitations, trouble breathing, digestive issues, sweating, syncope (fainting), trembling, as in not safe to drive, climb a ladder, use power tools, unsafe trembling. For some people, sounds sound different. They may feel as if they're in a tunnel and things are far away, colors seem different, more vivid, or muted. It may be described as an out-of-body experience, where people think they're going to lose control and go crazy. 

Body chemicals are going crazy. Adrenaline levels skyrocket, the so called "fight or flight" chemical. Your amygdala sends a distress signal to your hypothalamusm which fires messages via the autonomic nervous system to the adrenal glands, prompting them to flood your bloodstream with hormones including adrenaline and cortisol. 

It's a serious medical condition. Its not...as some people assume, something akin to a little girl frightened by a spider or some grown man who just needs to "Man up!" and all those other ignorant presumptions. And, most of the meds that doctors prescribe for it, simply do not work. Those meds were never designed for this to begin with. They found a small percent of people benefit from them, so Big Pharma and Wall Street starting pumping them as a "cure" when in reality, they are not. Benzos help, but due to the 50 year failed war on drugs, most doctors are afraid to prescribe them out of concern from catching "heat" from the DEA, or other flunky law enforcement related organizations.

So for the people that have this, beyond suffering from it and the negative impact on their lives, careers, education, relationships, they suffer the additional indignity of having to battle a medical establishment that in many cases is ignorant of it, take drugs that often exacerbate it, and in many cases have to deal with friends, family and coworkers who think they're just...emotionally weak. They are not weak. They're dealing with a very real, very serious, very challenging medical condition. They need support, not having their medical problem mocked or minimized. People should keep in mind, like every other disease, they didn't ask for it, don't want it, don't deserve it, they just got stuck with it.

The following is what I compiled from numerous legitimate sources listing the myriad of names of red dye and a plethora of information on the affect it can have on the human body, plus descriptions of where it can often be "hidden" in food and other products. 

Allura Red; Food Red 17; C.I. 16035; FD&C Red 40; E129; 2-Naphthalenesulfonic acid, 6-hydroxy-5-((2-methoxy-5-methyl-4-sulfophenyl)azo)-, disodium salt

Allura Red AC is a red azo dye that goes by several names including Allura Red, Food Red 17, C.I. 16035, and FD&C Red 40.[1] It is used as a food dye and has the E number E129. 

In the United States, Allura Red AC is approved by the FDA for use in cosmetics, drugs, and food. When prepared as a lake it is disclosed as Red 40 Lake or Red 40 Aluminum Lake. It is used in some tattoo inks and is used in many products, such as soft drinks, children's medications, and cotton candy. It is by far the most commonly used red dye in the United States, completely replacing amaranth (Red 2) and also replacing erythrosine (Red 3) in most applications due to the potential health effects of the two dyes. 

Allura Red AC (also known as Red 40) is a red azo dye that goes by several names including: Allura Red, Food Red 17, C.I. 16035, FD&C Red 40, 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, 6-hydroxy-5-((2-methoxy-5-methyl-4-sulfophenyl)azo)-, disodium salt, and disodium 6-hydroxy-5-((2-methoxy-5-methyl-4-sulfophenyl)azo)-2-naphthalene-sulfonate. It is used as a food dye and has the E number E129. Allura Red AC was originally introduced in the United States as a replacement for the use of amaranth as a food coloring.

It has the appearance of a dark red powder. It usually comes as a sodium salt but can also be used as both calcium and potassium salts. It is soluble in water. In water solution, its maximum absorbance lies at about 504 nm. Its melting point is at 300 degrees Celsius.

Allura Red AC is one of many High Production Volume Chemicals. Some manufacturers of Allura Red AC include: Asim Products, Sanchi Chemicals Pvt. Ltd., and Warner-Jenkinson Europe Ltd.

Red AC was originally manufactured from coal tar but is now mostly made from petroleum. Despite the popular misconception, Allura Red AC is not derived from any insect. 

The proper chemical name for Red40 is: 6-hydroxy-5-[(2-methoxy-5-methyl-4-sulfophenyl)azo]-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid which is a terribly long word for a very tiny molecule. 

Lakes: Often on a label you'll see a color listed as a lake, i.e.: "FD&C Red #40 Lake" or "Blue 1 Lake"  So what's a lake? Most of the dyes in use are water soluble, which is wonderful if you're coloring a juice or syrup. It becomes a bit of a problem if you're trying to color the outside of a medicine tablet. The manufacturer doesn't want the color to run off if the pill gets a little wet. The answer is to use a dye in a lake form. A lake is a solid, non water soluble form of a dye. It's produced by mixing the dye with Aluminum Hydroxide. By itself Aluminum Hydroxide is a safe food ingredient and it's often sold as an antacid. When combined with Red Dye #40, the chemicals form a deep red powder that can be applied to the outsides of tablets, gumballs and other solids. You may also notice this form listed in the ingredients as "Red 40 Aluminum Lake"

•Carcinogenicity – leading to cancer development

•Genotoxicity – leading to mutations or damaging chromosomes

•Neurotoxicity – leading to the damage of nerve tissue

Other “natural” food additives might be more problematic. For example:

•Annatto extract – a carotenoid extracted from a tropical tree seed (Bixa orellana), often added to cheese. Has been implicated in IgE mediated allergic reactions.

•Cochineal extract or carmine is a red dye made from crushed cochineal beetle. It’s now listed on the ingredient label as cochineal extract or carmine (before 2009 it didn’t need to be). 70,000 beetles may be killed to produce one pound of this red dye. Has been implicated in IgE mediated allergies.

•Caramel color – this makes cola brown and beer gold. Caramel color is the most commonly consumed food coloring ingredient in the world. It’s produced by heating carbohydrates (like fructose, dextrose, or invert sugar) with a food-grade acid (like sulfuric, phosphoric, or citric) to break the sugar bonds.

•Titanium dioxide, which makes things white (such as your soymilk), has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen — ”possibly carcinogenic to humans”.

•Aluminum, used as an additive in a variety of foods such as cake decorating materials, canned seafood (including caviar), and relish, might cause adverse effects related to reproduction, neurological behavior and neurological development.

Red dye allergy (also known as Red 40 Allergy) occurs to both adults and children, who are unable to digest red dye. Red dye is commonly referred to as food coloring #2, which is named carmine or cochineal extract. Another common source of red dye allergy is food coloring #40 which could be found in medicine and food. This ingredient is commonly used to preserve, prepare and put coloring to food. Although commonly misconstrued as food allergy, red dye allergy is actually a food intolerance.

The increase of food with preservatives and other artificial ingredients, also paved way for the increase of people with red dye allergy. Kids are commonly affected because they fancy eating snacks and sweets more. While the symptoms of red dye allergy can be treated, it's very hard to diagnose. That's because red dye allergy doesn't necessarily display visible allergic responses.

Skin Reactions: Just like other types of allergies, common skin symptoms can be attributed to red dye allergy. Itchiness, redness and slight swelling of the skin are some of these symptoms. Appearance of hives, rashes and thick bumps which contain fluid are also dermal signs of red dye allergy.

Angioedema is a more severe skin reaction caused by red dye allergy. It's characterized by the swelling of the deeper layers of the skin. This might look like raised welt's on the skin's surface. Angioedema can also be seen in the tongue, eyelids and the area surrounding the face.

Gastrointestinal Problems: Anyone who is allergic to a particular kind of food will have some type of gastrointestinal problem. In this case, red dye can cause diarrhea, bloating or give you a gassy feeling. It will usually start as a simple stomach ache. Then it can progress to a more serious digestive problem, such as vomiting and persistent excretions. Once the food with red dye has been excreted, the gastrointestinal stress will also cease.

Flu & Respiratory Problems: Red dye allergy can cause certain parts of the respiratory system to swell. It's hard to diagnose people with red dye allergy, because most of the symptoms exhibited are too common. The best example of which is fever and flu. Itchiness of the throat, eyes and nose, as well as constant sneezing are also caused by red dye allergy. While these symptoms can easily be treated with antibiotics and antihistamines, the allergy can go undetected for years. This is why most people are wheezing, coughing or a general whistling in the chest.

Anaphylactic Shock: Red dye allergy, if left untreated, can end up becoming severe. Anaphylactic shock is the worst stage of this allergy. Its early signs are respiratory symptoms paired with swelling of the entire body. This inflammation can make it hard for someone to swallow breathe. It is treated with the injection of adrenaline or epinephrine.

Other Symptoms: •Faster pulse •Significant drop in blood pressure •Dizziness •Fainting •Blocked airways •Joint pains •Lack of appetite •Lack of sleep •Poor concentration •Loss of consciousness •Hypersensitivity •ADHD (more common among children)  

Red #40 is a red azo dye that was introduced to the United States to be used as a replacement for Amaranth or red #2. Red #2 was banned in the United States in 1976 because the food dye proved to be carcinogenic and had the potential to cause cancer. Red #40 was originally manufactured from coal tar, but is now made from petroleum. The food dye is commonly known as Red #40 but has several different names these names include Allura Red AC, Food Red 17, Calcium Lake, Aluminium lake, and C.I.16035.
